ChessDream serves free chess tactics puzzles taken from the open Lichess puzzle database, each one drawn from a real game and labelled with the tactical themes it contains — fork, pin, skewer, deflection, back-rank mate, and many more. You can filter by theme and by difficulty rating, and work through puzzles untimed or against a puzzle-rush clock. No account is required.
Tactics improve through pattern recognition, not through volume alone. Solving a fork puzzle teaches you very little; solving many fork puzzles until the geometry of a fork becomes something you notice rather than calculate is what changes your games. That is why filtering by theme matters — concentrating on one motif at a time builds the pattern far faster than random puzzles do.
The puzzle set comes from the Lichess open puzzle database, which is released into the public domain. Every puzzle was generated from a real game where a player had a concrete tactical opportunity, and each carries a difficulty rating and the list of themes that apply to it.
Yes. All puzzles are free and unlimited, and no account is required to solve them.
Consistency matters more than volume. A short daily session where you genuinely work out each position beats a long weekly session of rapid guessing, because pattern recognition is built by repeated spaced exposure rather than by total puzzle count.
Choose puzzles you solve most but not all of the time. If every puzzle falls immediately you are rehearsing patterns you already own, and if almost none do you are guessing rather than recognising.
They come from the Lichess open puzzle database, a public-domain collection of positions generated from real games, each tagged with tactical themes and a difficulty rating.
Training one tactical motif at a time builds the pattern faster than mixed puzzles do, because recognition comes from repeated exposure to the same shape. Each theme below has its own trainer, preloaded with only puzzles carrying that motif.
