ChessDream lets you play full games against the Stockfish engine at five selectable difficulty levels, from beginner up to grandmaster. Each level is produced by limiting the engine's search depth and skill setting, so the lower levels play recognisably human-scale chess with real mistakes rather than perfect moves. The engine runs locally in your browser, games start instantly, and no account is required.

    How the difficulty levels work

Each level constrains Stockfish rather than swapping in a different engine. Lower levels search fewer moves ahead and use a reduced skill setting, which makes the bot overlook tactics in the way a weaker human would, instead of playing perfectly and then blundering at random. The level names describe the intended playing strength, not a formally calibrated rating.

How to get better by playing bots

    1. Pick a level you lose to roughly half the time — winning every game teaches nothing.
    2. Play the game out without taking moves back.
    3. Afterwards, run the game through the analysis tool.
    4. Find the first move where the evaluation turned against you and work out what you missed.
    5. Play the next game watching specifically for that pattern.

    Bots versus human opponents

Bots are better for deliberate practice because they are always available, never tilt, and let you set the difficulty precisely. Human opponents are better for competitive experience, since they set traps, manage the clock against you, and play the practical tricks an engine never bothers with. Most improving players benefit from both.
