Bird Opening is a chess opening that arises after 1.f4. It is classified A02 in the ECO system, and the position after these moves has black to move. The Bird Opening plays 1.f4, staking a claim to e5 from the flank. It is essentially a Dutch Defense with colours reversed and an extra tempo, and its main practical value is that most opponents have prepared very little against it.
Unbalanced from move one. White often builds a Stonewall structure and plays for a kingside attack, though the early f-pawn move does weaken the king's diagonal — a fact Black can test immediately with From's Gambit.
Players who want to avoid mainstream theory entirely and are comfortable in Dutch-style structures.
